Camp Shifts Focus to What Comes Next

Boys from across the NSW North West Region came together in Tamworth for a leadership camp and employment forum in March.

The NSW North West Region Senior Leadership Camp in Tamworth brought together Year 11 and 12 academy members for a multi-day experience focused on leadership, accountability and preparing for life beyond school.

The camp challenged participants to step outside their usual routines and into environments that required greater discipline and ownership. Sessions throughout the week focused on decision-making, personal standards and the responsibility that comes with leadership, both in everyday situations and in moments that test character.

A key component of the camp was the NSW North West Employment Forum, which connected academy members with a broad range of Clontarf partners, employers and training providers. With more than 20 organisations in attendance, the format gave each participant the opportunity to engage directly, ask questions and build confidence in a professional setting.

Industries represented included energy, agriculture, retail and vocational education, with organisations such as Santos, Essential Energy, QUBE, TAFE NSW and major employers like Woolworths and Bunnings involved. For some academy members, it was their first experience speaking directly with employers, providing a practical insight into the pathways available after school.

An “On the Lounge” discussion during the forum brought together a mix of voices, including a Clontarf alumnus now working in education and another employed in the automotive industry. Their experiences reinforced that there is no single pathway to success, and that progress often comes from taking opportunities and backing your own direction.

Away from the forum, the camp combined physical challenges and team-based activities designed to build resilience and cohesion. Whether through structured training, competitive matches or group challenges, the focus remained consistent: working together, maintaining standards and supporting one another.

The group also took part in sessions focused on performance, preparation and wellbeing, highlighting the habits and consistency required to succeed both during school and beyond.

Throughout the camp, academy members were encouraged to reflect on what comes next — not just immediate decisions, but longer-term goals around employment, training and personal development.

By the end of the week, there was a clear shift in confidence and outlook. The combination of leadership development, real-world exposure and shared experience provided a strong platform as these young men move toward the final stages of their schooling and into their next chapter.
