Year 8 and 9 boys from Coodanup Academy (Mandurah, WA) recently took part in a Road Smart Kickstart session with the Road Safety Commission. The session gave the boys a fun and practical way to learn about road safety before they reach the age of applying for their learner’s permit.
Delivered by Sarah and Sam from the Road Safety Commission, the session used learning games and practical activities to help the boys think about safe choices on and around the road.
Road Smart Kickstart is a Western Australian first and is designed to teach young people about road safety early.
Throughout the session, the boys moved through a range of learning stations and took part with plenty of energy. The activities encouraged them to talk through different road safety situations, work together and think carefully about the choices they may need to make as future road users.
The program also helped students understand why safe behaviour matters before they start driving. By learning about road safety early, the boys are better prepared to become responsible and confident road users in the years ahead.
Clontarf General Manager – Employment Marcus Harrold said gaining a driver’s licence can open up important employment and training opportunities for young men, particularly in regional areas.
“Starting road safety education early helps academy members understand the responsibility that comes with driving and prepares them well before they begin working towards their learner’s permit. Developing safe habits from the outset is an important step towards greater independence and being ready to take up future work opportunities,” Marcus said.
