Rising to the Challenge

Earlier this month, the biggest annual Clontarf basketball carnival in WA took place at the Bendat Basketball Centre in Perth, drawing 25 teams from Clontarf Academies across Western Australia.

Divided into three divisions, the carnival was a thrilling display of athletic talent, teamwork and ‘Clontarf Spirit’. Participants converged for a high-energy competition, where boys not only showcased their basketball skills but also embraced the core values of camaraderie and mutual respect.

Kiara Academy’s Undefeated Triumph
Kiara Academy achieved an impressive milestone by securing their first senior basketball title, remaining undefeated throughout the tournament. The Year 10, 11 and 12 boys, who regularly play basketball together, demonstrated excellent chemistry and teamwork from the start. Under the leadership of coaches Anthony Murace and Jono Ryan, the team displayed relentless determination, culminating in a hard-fought victory against Kalgoorlie in the grand final.

Their preparation began with a camp in collaboration with Fremantle Academy, where they stayed at Claremont Football Club. The night before the carnival, the team enjoyed a bonding movie outing followed by dinner, setting the tone for the following day’s success.

Swan View Academy’s Strong Showing
Swan View Academy’s senior boys also had a standout performance at the carnival, advancing to the semi-finals. Despite narrowly missing out on the grand final, the boys exhibited impressive skills and teamwork. They ensured everyone on the team had a chance to contribute, with standout player Raphael Pryor earning the Clontarf Spirit Award for his leadership and sportsmanship.

Swan View’s experience extended beyond the court, with the boys attending a two-night camp filled with activities. Highlights included a team dinner, a movie night and hearty meals back at their accommodation, where they enjoyed steak sandwiches and a big breakfast. The camp provided an opportunity for the senior boys to bond and celebrate their efforts during the term.

A Carnival of Clontarf Spirit
While Kiara Academy’s win was a standout, every participating academy left the event with memorable experiences and a renewed sense of unity. The carnival embodied the Clontarf values of resilience, teamwork and friendship, with each academy contributing to the vibrant and competitive atmosphere. The event was made possible by the generous support of Clontarf’s partners, who continue to play an essential role in the success of these initiatives.
