After graduating from Murgon State High School (QLD) in 2024, where he served as School Captain, Murgon Academy alumnus Shamus Cobbo has continued looking for ways to support and inspire young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Now based in Brisbane, where he moved to play football alongside his brother, Shamus took on a mentoring role at the Murri School. The role gave him the chance to work closely with Indigenous students and helped him discover a passion for mentoring and working with young people.
Wanting to make an even bigger difference, Shamus recently returned to his hometown of Cherbourg and began working at Cherbourg State School, the same primary school he once attended. Since returning home, he has quickly become a positive role model around the school and regularly spends time in the Clontarf room connecting with the boys.
Cherbourg Academy Director Cody said it has been great for the boys to have someone as well known and respected as Shamus around the Academy.
Alongside his work at the school, Shamus is also back playing football for Cherbourg in the South Burnett A Grade competition.
Shamus continues to set a strong example for young people in Cherbourg through his leadership, humility and commitment to community. His journey highlights the importance of giving back and creating opportunities for the next generation.
