Hot on the heels – or wheels – of the Darwin Billy Cart Derby earlier this month, racing returned in Alice Springs.
Academy members from across Central Australia gathered at Bunnings Alice Springs for the NT Central Region Billy Cart Derby.
Teams raced their handmade carts around the carpark track. The event brought plenty of speed, creativity and good-natured competition.
Every academy in the region was represented. The Tennant Creek academies earned the Best Presentation award for their Harry Potter-themed costumes and cart.
Meanwhile, Yirara Academy continued its remarkable run on the track. The reigning champions defeated Tennant Creek in a close final to claim their fourth consecutive title.
NT Central Regional Manager Christian Philpot praised the boys’ efforts throughout the event.
“The boys put an enormous amount of effort into designing and building their carts, planning their costumes and representing their academies,” Christian said.
“Their effort was clear throughout the day, and they should all be proud of what they produced.”

With preparations already beginning for next year’s event, the academies will be looking for new ways to challenge Yirara’s impressive winning streak.
