Cooper Thompson — Endeavour Academy, Class of 2022
Cooper Finn Thompson, a proud Wiradjuri man, was part of the Endeavour Clontarf Academy from Year 8 through to Year 12. During that time he navigated injury, brain surgery and the disruption of COVID, while remaining committed to school, football and his future.
Now in his second year as an apprentice Fitter and Turner at TAFE and recently making his First Grade debut for his local club, Cooper wrote to Clontarf staff to thank them for the role they played in his journey.
Below is Cooper’s letter in full.
“Dear Clontarf Family,
My name is Cooper Thompson (Wiradjuri), and I was part of the Endeavour Sports High Clontarf Academy from Year 8 through to Year 12. I wanted to write to you all to say thank you — for everything you’ve done for me and for the massive difference you’ve made in my life.
When I first joined Clontarf, I didn’t know anyone and felt nervous about fitting in. But from the very first day, you made me feel welcome. The Academy quickly became a safe and friendly place where I could hang out, cook, eat and just be myself. Before long, I’d made real friendships that are still strong today.
You taught me so much more than just schoolwork. The mentors supported me in every part of life — school, sport and personal challenges. When I was injured and couldn’t play sport, you made sure I still felt included and encouraged me to stay positive and keep going.
In 2021, when I had brain surgery, it was one of the hardest times of my life, especially thinking that I would never play footy again. But you — my Clontarf family — were there for me every step of the way. The visits, messages and constant check-ins meant more than I can say. You lifted my spirits when I needed it most and showed me what real support and family look like.
During COVID, when everything moved online, those regular Zoom catch-ups helped me stay connected and focused at a time when it would’ve been easy to give up. I’ll never forget how much fun we had cooking together online from our own kitchens — it really kept our spirits up and brought everyone closer.
Looking back now, I honestly don’t think I would have finished high school without Clontarf. You gave me confidence, direction and belief in myself. The mentoring, tutoring, wellbeing support, fitness and encouragement kept me on track, even when things got tough.
Now, I’m in my second year as an apprentice Fitter and Turner at TAFE, and the lessons I learned through Clontarf — about hard work, respect and resilience — have helped me get here. I’m back playing football, and this year, I was proud to make my First Grade debut for my local club. I’m so proud to still be connected through the Clontarf alumni, and it means a lot that the support and friendships continue even after school.
Clontarf didn’t just give me opportunities — you gave me belonging, purpose and pride in who I am. I’ll always be grateful for everything you’ve done for me and for so many other young men like me.
Thank you for everything.”
